When we talk about “foreign investment,” there are actually two very different types. One is portfolio investment, such as buying stocks and bonds, which reflects the movement of short-term capital. The other is Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). While portfolio investment seeks short-term financial returns, FDI is far more long-term and structural in nature. Foreign companies or investors do not merely buy shares. Instead, they build factories, set up research centers, hire local workers, and transfer technology.
